China Shanghai International Technology Fair (CSITF)

About the  CSITF

The China Shanghai International Technology Fair (CSITF), which will take place from April 20 to 22, is the most important national technology fair in China. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), the Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST), and Shanghai Municipality jointly organise this fair. Last year, Minister Wan Gang from MOST, Vice-Minister Fang Aiqing from MOFCOM, and Mayor Yang Xiong of Shanghai visited the fair. Around 900 companies and knowledge institutes will exhibit during the fair, which will attract over 50,000 visitors – with 50% management, R&D or Technology trade professionals (and 20% sales/marketing).

The Netherlands as Guest Country of Honor

The Netherlands is invited to be this year’s Guest Country of Honor for the CSITF from 20 to 22 April 2017. As Guest Country of Honor, the Netherlands has the opportunity to promote itself as knowledge partner for China. Dutch companies and knowledge institutes present themselves at the Holland Innovation Pavilion, which will be visited by Chinese and Dutch officials, press, and technology experts. At the Holland Innovation Pavilion, we will showcase the Netherlands as an innovative, technology-driven and cooperation-minded country.

As Guest Country of Honor, the Netherlands will organise seminars and workshop in the field of IP Management & Open Innovation, High Tech Systems and Materials, Chemistry, Agricultural Technologies, Green Technologies and start-ups.

Innovation missions with Martijn van Dam, Minister for Agriculture

This year, four different innovation missions will be organised around the CSITF. Martijn van Dam, Dutch Minister for Agriculture will lead the innovation missions for the special occasion of the CSITF.  The four themes of the innovation missions are:

  1. Agricultural Technologies
  2. Green Technologies
  3. High Tech Systems and Materials
  4. Chemistry

As Guest Country of Honor, the Netherlands will organise seminars and symposia on the topics mentioned above. We offer Dutch companies and institutes the opportunity to position themselves as innovative partners and knowledge providers in the Chinese market.

Opportunities in China

The credo of CSITF is “Innovation-driven development, intellectual property protection, and technology trade promotion”. This is in line with the national strategy of China, in which innovative technologies lead the way towards a competitive and sustainable economy. CSITF attracts organisations that underscore this direction. By participating, Dutch companies, institutes and start-ups distinguish themselves as innovative collaboration partners and knowledge providers in the Chinese market. They thereby position the Netherlands as a high-tech, innovative and cooperation driven country.

Innovation Mission: Agricultural Technologies

Introduction

The Netherlands is the second-largest exporter of agricultural food products in the world. In 2050, there will be nine billion mouths to feed in the world. This is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Dutch entrepreneurs and researchers are eager to address and solve global challenges. In order to achieve this aim, the Netherlands is making considerable investments in high-quality research to develop new, functional, agricultural food products and upgrade standard foodstuffs to high-value ones, with the aim to become a global leader in terms of innovation.

On the special occasion of the 5th China Shanghai International Technology Fair (CSITF) and the Netherlands as Guest Country of Honor, an agricultural innovation mission to Beijing and Shanghai will take place from April 22 until April 27. The Dutch Minister for Agriculture Martijn van Dam will lead this innovation mission.

China’s strategy

China will have to make great steps in the coming years to ensure the food supply for the future. Large population, a limited area suitable for agriculture and climate changes (drought, natural disasters, water scarcity) make it necessary for more efficient use of the available resources.  Following these challenges, the Ministry for Agriculture pushes forward a strategic policy promoting technological development, quality improvement and increasing the comprehensive benefits and competitiveness of the agricultural sector.

The Netherlands and China do work a lot together in the agricultural sector. Traditionally this collaboration focussed mainly on the direct export of agricultural products (pork meat, milk powder etc)). Recently, an increasing interest has been noticed from Chinese counterparts in the field of agricultural optimisation and automation technologies. Agricultural research and development is an absolute strength of the Netherlands and therefore we see many opportunities for Sino-Dutch collaboration; both academically and commercially.

Focus of the Innovation Mission

Under the lead of Dutch Minister for Agriculture Martijn van Dam, the agricultural innovation mission will focus on sustainable agricultural food technologies. This mission aims to promote business opportunities in the field of agricultural technologies between China and the Netherlands and enhance the collaboration in the field of agricultural technologies among governments, knowledge institutions and industries.

A special seminar on “Sustainable Agro-food Technologies: Experiences in the Netherlands and China” will be organised by the Holland Innovation Network China on April 21 from 9:30-11:30 at the CSITF venue.

Renewables to contribute half of China’s new power generation capacity growth by 2030

More than half of China’s new power generation capacity growth by 2030 will be from renewable sources. By that time the installed renewable capacity will be equal to that of coal. Coal-fired power generation capacity will decrease from 67% in 2012 to 44% in 2030 though in absolute terms will continue to grow by 25GW/yr – still almost one-third of new construction and equal to two large coal plants every month. Renewables including hydro will increase from 27% to 44% in 2030 at 47GW/yr.

This means that China is going to invest a lot in its renewable energy infrastructure, but that the need for cleaner coal-fired power generation technologies will continue to grow as well.

CAS supports 5 new centres of excellence for joint research with developing countries

logoThe Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) invested US$6.5 million over the next three years in five CAS-TWAS (The World Academy of Science) Centres of Excellence accommodated within institutes of CAS. The funding will support joint research projects to build scientific strength and drive innovation in the developing world.

The TWAS is the international science academy that aims to promote scientific excellence and capacity in the South for science-based sustainable development. CAS is hosting the TWAS Regional Office for East & Southeast Asia in Beijing and this year CAS-president Bai Chunli was elected as the new TWAS president, becoming the first Chinese national to take up this position.

The new centres will focus on five areas:

  1. climate
  2. water
  3. biotechnology
  4. green technology
  5. space technology for disaster mitigation

They were selected out of 22 CAS-TWAS Centres of Excellence based on peer review of their previous cooperation with TWAS and other developing countries, and their research capacity. Each centre will offer a range of educational and training opportunities for scientists and engineers from the developing world, with the goal of advancing research, exchanging knowledge and building global networks.

The CAS additional funding will also be used for organising workshops, training and PhD programmes through the existing wider network of CAS-TWAS Centres of Excellence and the TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme at Centres of Excellence in the South. This will allow TWAS centres to go beyond their usual three-month exchanges of researchers. The first scientific workshops at the centres started in August and more are planned for September this year.
